Ndalama Capital Mining is looking for a Rock Engineer to ensure the safety and stability of our mining operations. You will design and monitor rock support systems while managing risks associated with slope failures. This role is crucial for maintaining safety and optimizing extraction processes.
Safety-focused and engineering-driven environment
Rock Engineer Location: Steelport, Limpopo Industry: Mining Reference: Ref:NS/ REN/26 Job Summary We are seeking a highly competent, legally minded Rock Engineer to ensure the structural integrity, slope stability, and overall geotechnical safety of our mining operations. In this critical safety role, you will be appointed in terms of the South African Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) to design, implement, and monitor robust rock mass support systems while mitigating risks associated with falls of ground or slope failures. The individual will manage all geotechnical and strata control functions for the operations and report to the Mine Manager(Section 3\.1 Appointee). The successful candidate will blend advanced engineering design with strict regulatory compliance to protect lives and optimize extraction. Key Responsibilities As a key custodian of safety and structural design, your core duties will include: Geotechnical Core Logging and Mapping: Perform structural mapping of pit faces and log geotechnical core to accurately profile the host rock, weathered zones, and structural defects (faults, joints) intersecting the chrome seams. Blasting Impact Optimization: Collaborate with the drilling and blasting teams to monitor and minimize blast\-induced vibration, protecting highwall integrity and reducing backbreak. Waste Dump and Stockpile Stability: Monitor and evaluate the structural integrity of waste rock dumps, overburden stockpiles, and low\-grade chrome storage areas to prevent catastrophic tip failures. Catch Bench and Rockfall Management: Design and audit mitigation measures for localised rockfalls, including catch benches, scaling operations, and localized mesh/anchoring where necessary. Highwall Risk Management: Implement, manage, and interpret data from surface monitoring systems \- specifically slope stability radar (SSR), prisms, and extensometers \- to provide early warning of wall failures. Slope Stability Analysis and Pit Design: Conduct kinematic and numerical modelling (2D/3D limit equilibrium/finite element software) to design and optimize stable pit walls, bench geometrics, and overall slope angles. Operational Compliance: Conduct daily pit inspections, sign off on safe working areas near highwalls, and ensure alignment with mandatory Codes of Practice (COP) for surface deposits. Requirements Bsc or BTech in MiningEngineering, Geology, or Engineering Geology, and eligibility for registration with SANIRE (South African National Institute of Rock Engineering) or ECSA Minimum 3 \- 5 years of active operational experience as a Geotechnician or Rock Engineer specifically within an opencast mining (Chrome, Platinum, or Iron Ore experience is highly advantageous). Proven experience in managing fractured rock masses and complex structural geologies typical of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) chrome seams. Proficiency in geotechnical software for slope stability and kinematic analysis (e,g., Rocscience suite like slide 3, Dips, and...
