PBT Group is looking for a Java Developer to join their payments engineering team in Cape Town. This role is embedded within a major banking environment and focuses on developing and maintaining payment processing systems, particularly around EMV Kernel functionality. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Java and a deep understanding of the payments stack, including transaction processing and integration with banking systems.
In this position, you will be responsible for: • Developing, maintaining, and enhancing Java-based components within the payments processing stack • Working on EMV Kernel integration and transaction processing logic for both chip-based and contactless payments • Building and maintaining integrations between payment terminals, POS/ATM devices, and core banking systems • Implementing transaction processing workflows such as authorisation, settlement, and reconciliation • Contributing to EMV certification processes and ensuring compliance with industry standards • Debugging and resolving complex issues across the payments stack
This role suits someone with at least 5 years of hands-on Java development experience, particularly in a payments or fintech environment. You should be familiar with payment processing concepts and have experience with REST and SOAP web services. Strong secure coding practices are essential, given the financial context of the work.
