The best South African cities for tech jobs

Where the tech work is concentrated, who's hiring, and how remote shifts the picture.

Last updated: 2026/07/13, 17:15:08

South Africa's tech work isn't evenly spread. Johannesburg leads with 3858 new listings this week, and roughly 0% of listings are fully remote, so where you live matters less than it used to.

The ranking, by new listings this week

These counts reflect fresh listings from the last 7 days. Click any city to see every active role there, not just this week's.

  1. Johannesburg3858 new this week (+68% vs prior week)
  2. Cape Town1918 new this week (+20% vs prior week)
  3. Midrand698 new this week (+33% vs prior week)
  4. Pretoria476 new this week (+4% vs prior week)
  5. Centurion388 new this week (+30% vs prior week)
  6. Sandton375 new this week (-11% vs prior week)

Cape Town vs Johannesburg

The honest answer: it depends on the role and the stack. Joburg tends to skew enterprise (banks, insurance, telcos) with heavy demand for Java, .NET, and SAP. Cape Town leans product, startup, and design (TypeScript, React, Python, UX). Neither generalisation holds perfectly, but it's a useful starting frame when you're deciding where to focus your search.

The Gauteng cluster

Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, Centurion, and Midrand all sit within commuting distance of each other. If you're in Gauteng, browse all five; many listings list one suburb but would consider the wider area. Collectively they make up the majority of in-office and hybrid SA tech roles.

Remote and hybrid work

Roughly 0% of listings on our board are fully remote. If you're open to working for a SA company from anywhere in the country, location restrictions loosen considerably. Browse remote jobs directly, or use the workplace filter on the jobs page to toggle between remote, hybrid, and on-site.

One thing to watch: "remote" in SA job ads sometimes means "remote with regular office days". Read the listing summary; we surface the workplace policy on every card so you're not surprised after applying.

How to choose

  • Start with the role, not the city. Find where the most listings for your target role are. Use the city pages (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria) and filter by role.
  • Factor in cost of living. Johannesburg and Cape Town cost roughly similar at a senior level; smaller cities stretch the same salary further.
  • If remote-first companies are actively hiring you, location becomes mostly a quality-of-life question rather than a career one.
  • Check the full active count for a city, not just this week's fresh figure. A city might have fewer new listings this week but a deep pool of active roles.
